Canned corn, green beans and big jars of pickles are stacked to the ceiling at MANNA FoodBank’s distribution center on Swannanoa River Road, yet even this well-stocked warehouse isn’t enough to feed the hungry in Western North Carolina.
And despite recent signs that the economy is improving, local food demand hasn’t slowed.
“We’re not seeing a diminished need at all,” notes Communications and Marketing Coordinator Joshua Stack. “Our agencies are reporting they consistently need more food, and we’re struggling to get them enough.”

Alan Hantz, supervisor
I teach media aesthetics, media law, and photojournalism. I have served as a political research consultant, and has researched media in politics. My photography has been shown in galleries, and used in marketing campaigns by artists and nonprofit agencies, including TEDx Asheville and the MANNA FoodBank, and published in regional magazines. This project is a part of the mass communication undergraduate research course, which I supervise.

Chris Fish: Videographer, editor, music composer
I’m a senior mass communication major with a concentration in journalism. I was a staff writer for The Blue Banner for three semesters, and I interned with Asheville Radio Group in 2011. Currently, my work for the documentary will consist of filming, editing, researching and composing a soundtrack.

I’m a junior double-majored in mass communications and international studies. I wrote for the UNCA paper, the Blue Banner, interned at the Asheville Citizen-Times in the Editorial section, and am currently conducting an internship with the Asheville Grown Business Alliance (the ones that make the “Love Asheville” signs and stickers). Although my concentration is on international and Middle Eastern journalism, I’m also very interested in researching and documenting the problems and nuances of poverty in Western North Carolina.
My roles in this project include writing, interviewing and researching. I’m so excited and proud to be working on this documentary project!
